When searching for the perfect boat, the partners of Isola Charters stumbled upon a USA review for the Riviera 64SMY. The review began with: “They often say life is all about compromises, but in building the Riviera 64SMY, there are no compromises whatsoever. Riviera has managed to build the ultimate luxury sports fishing vessel that is equally at home entertaining family and friends in the harbor as she is miles offshore in the roughest of conditions sports fishing.”

After inspecting the Riviera 64SMY, the partners knew they had found the perfect vessel. One partner is passionate about fishing and has a large family that enjoys boating, while the other simply loves luxury boating.

Following a good festive season of charters and personal use, the sports fishing capability of the boat was recently put to the test as the southern bluefin tuna run hit Sydney waters. Last Friday, despite rough conditions that deterred many trailer boats, Isola powered through the choppy waves and 20-knot winds at 17 knots, while the crew enjoyed the espresso machine and breakfast!

A few hours later, the crew was fishing nearly 30 nautical miles southeast of Brownes Mountain, eagerly waiting for a bite. At very low speed (7.5 knots) and with the skipper focused solely on where the fish might be and NOT crew comfort, three rods suddenly buckled over at 3:30 PM and the reels screamed. One rod went slack before anyone could grab it, but the other two hooked up and we had 2 anglers engaged in solid 40-minute fights.

An hour and a half later, still working the area, it was agreed to pull lines at 5 PM. Just as the skipper radioed the crew, one guy requested five more minutes and as the golden winter sun began to set, three rods went off again at bang on 5:05 PM. Iit was game on again! One fish got away, but the crew was relieved to be fighting only two fish in the rough conditions.

Another half-hour later and with two more fish landed, Isola headed back. All four fishermen who boated fish caught their first-ever southern bluefin. One fish weighed 80 kg, and the other three were 60-70 kg. Two gents had been chasing this bluefin goal for over two decades!

This unforgettable experience proved that the Riviera 64SMY was indeed the perfect vessel for Isola Charters, excelling in both luxury harbour boating AND serious sports fishing.
